Glossary โ€‹

This is a non-exhaustive list of terms used by CoolerControl and their definitions.

Profiles โ€‹

Profiles define customizable settings for controlling fan speeds, and the same Profile can be used for multiple fans. Types include:

  • Fixed speeds
  • Fan Curves/Graphs
  • Mix Profiles
  • Default Device Settings

Profiles serve as the foundation for controlling fan speed, and can be further enhanced with more advanced algorithms applying Functions.

Functions โ€‹

Functions are configurable algorithms that are applied to a Profile's output. They enable you to manage when fan speed changes occur, adjust hysteresis settings, and utilize moving averages for dynamic temperatures.

The Identity Function is the simplest option, as it does not modify the calculated Profile's output; it merely allows you to set the minimum and maximum speed duty changes. This is especially beneficial to minimize constant fluctuations in fan speeds.

Dashboards โ€‹

Dashboards enable you to view your system's sensor data according to your preferences. You can choose between time-based or table-based charts and adjust the filters and settings for each chart to focus on the specific data you want to view. Additionally, you can create multiple dashboards customized to suit your needs.

Modes โ€‹

Modes enable you to save device channel settings for quick and easy application. For example, you can create a 'Gaming' Mode and a 'Silent' Mode, allowing you to easily switch between them.

Please note that creating different Fan Profiles may be necessary for each Mode, as Modes only include channel configurations and do not encompass internal Profile or Function settings.

Custom Sensors โ€‹

Custom Sensors enable you to combine existing sensors in various ways, enhancing your control and efficiency over system cooling. Additionally, they support file-based data, enabling you to script external sensor inputs for even greater flexibility.

Note: You can use a Mix Profile to combine multiple Custom Sensor outputs.

Alerts โ€‹

Alerts are used to notify you when certain conditions occur. They can monitor temperatures and fan speeds, ensuring that your system is operating properly.

Alerts are configured for specific sensor value ranges and will send a notification if the value goes outside of or back within acceptable thresholds.
